Pressure Vessel Inspection & Registration

Pressure vessels are critical infrastructure in compressed air systems and industrial operations. Yet compliance with pressure vessel inspection and registration requirements remains a source of confusion for many facility managers and maintenance teams across South Australia and the Northern Territory.

Operating unregistered air receivers puts your operation at risk of fines, legal action, and, most critically, serious injuries or fatalities. Pressure vessel failures can cause explosions, leading to severe injuries or even death. At Mobile Compressed Air, we’ve worked with industrial operators for over 35 years. We understand the regulatory landscape. We know what compliance looks like in practice. And we support your team in achieving and maintaining it.

You keep production moving. Mobile Compressed Air keeps your equipment safe, compliant, and registered.

Pressure Vessel Inspection & Registration Information

Why Pressure Vessel Inspection Matters

Air receivers and other pressure vessels are integral components of compressed air systems. Without regular maintenance and inspection, air receivers can deteriorate, corrode, or accumulate scale and contaminants. Operating air receivers beyond their design pressure or without proper inspection significantly increases the risk of catastrophic failure.

To comply with Australian regulations and ensure safety across your operation, pressure vessels must be registered and regularly inspected. This is not bureaucratic overhead; it is a legal and safety requirement that protects your team, your operation, and your facility. The consequences of non-compliance include substantial fines, legal liability, and the very real risk of serious workplace injuries or fatalities.

Compliance Requirements for Air Receivers

In South Australia and the Northern Territory, pressure vessels including air receivers and non-fired vessels must be registered and regularly inspected to meet Australian Standards. Compliance is governed by SafeWork SA in South Australia and equivalent authorities in the Northern Territory.

Air receivers must be registered before they enter service. Individual registration captures the vessel’s details, location, service conditions, and operational parameters. This registration ensures proper documentation and tracking throughout the vessel’s operational life. Once registered, your air receiver must be regularly inspected by a competent person to ensure it remains safe to operate.

Inspection Requirements

Once registered, pressure vessels must be regularly inspected by a competent person to ensure they are safe to operate. In South Australia, regulations require inspections to be conducted in accordance with Australian Standard AS/NZS 3788:2024. This standard outlines mandatory inspection intervals, testing protocols, documentation requirements, and the competency required of inspection personnel.

For air receivers, inspections are typically conducted every two years. During inspection, a competent person assesses the vessel’s external condition, looking for signs of corrosion, damage, leakage, or deterioration. Internal inspections, where a competent person accesses the vessel’s interior, evaluate corrosion, scale buildup, material degradation, and overall internal condition.

A commissioning inspection must also be conducted before a pressure vessel is put into service for the first time. This verifies the vessel’s integrity, confirms it meets design specifications, and ensures it is suitable for operation under the intended conditions.

Australian Standards and Safety

Pressure vessel safety in Australia is governed by Australian Standard AS/NZS 3788:2024. This standard sets mandatory inspection intervals, testing protocols, and documentation requirements to ensure pressure equipment operates safely throughout its service life.

Compliance with AS/NZS 3788 is essential. Regular inspections identify deterioration, corrosion, and other conditions that could lead to failure. Documentation of inspection results provides objective evidence of your vessel’s condition and your commitment to maintaining a safe operation.

Documentation and Registration

Compliance requires meticulous documentation. Inspection records, test results, and certification must be maintained and available for audit. Your maintenance manager and operations team must have knowledge of your vessels’ registration status, inspection schedules, and compliance requirements. This knowledge underpins safe operation and regulatory compliance.

If you relocate or decommission a pressure vessel, SafeWork SA (in South Australia) or equivalent authorities (in the Northern Territory) must be notified. This maintains accurate records and ensures compliance as your operation evolves.

The Real Cost of Non-Compliance

Failure to register or inspect pressure vessels can lead to significant fines and potential legal action. Beyond financial penalties, non-compliance creates liability exposure for you, your maintenance team, and your organisation.

More importantly, non-compliance puts your people at risk. Pressure vessel failures can cause serious injuries, fatalities, and catastrophic incidents. Compliance requirements exist because pressure equipment failure has serious consequences. The risk is real, and the stakes are high.

How Mobile Compressed Air Supports Your Compliance

Mobile Compressed Air delivers comprehensive pressure vessel inspection and registration support across South Australia and the Northern Territory. Our team understands SafeWork SA requirements, Australian Standards, and the practical realities of keeping your compressed air systems and pressure equipment compliant.

We manage SafeWork SA registration for air receivers and other non-fired vessels. We conduct commissioning inspections for new equipment before it enters service. We perform regular external and internal inspections using qualified competent persons, following AS/NZS 3788:2024 standards. We maintain inspection documentation and certification, and we advise on inspection intervals based on your vessel’s condition and service requirements.

When you relocate or decommission equipment, we handle regulatory notifications and ensure all documentation is current. Our approach is straightforward: we ensure your pressure vessels are properly registered, regularly inspected, comprehensively documented, and continuously compliant. You can focus on production. We ensure your equipment meets every safety and regulatory requirement.

As a locally based service provider, we understand the specific needs of South Australian and Northern Territory operations. We’re responsive, reliable, and committed to keeping your equipment safe and your operation compliant. Whether you operate a single air receiver or multiple pressure vessels across multiple sites, we provide the expertise and ongoing support you need.

Getting Started

Your first step is clarifying your current pressure vessel inventory. What air receivers or storage vessels does your facility operate? Are they registered with SafeWork SA or the relevant Northern Territory authority? When were they last inspected? What is their current condition?

Contact Mobile Compressed Air. We’ll assess your pressure equipment, confirm registration status, identify any compliance gaps, and outline an inspection and maintenance schedule that keeps your operation safe and compliant. We serve facilities across South Australia and the Northern Territory with the same commitment to reliability, safety, and local support.

Pressure vessel compliance is not optional. It is a legal requirement that protects your team and your operation. We deliver the expertise, documentation, and ongoing support to achieve and maintain it.
