How Mobile Compressed Air Helped Optofab Support Australia’s Next Generation of Advanced Manufacturing

Optofab Case Study Background

Optofab is part of the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF), providing researchers and industry partners with access to world-class micro and nano fabrication tools. Its Adelaide Node, based at the University of Adelaide, recently expanded its precision machining capabilities with the addition of a new state-of-the-art five-axis CNC milling machine.

The machine opens new possibilities in complex prototyping, high-value custom parts, and advanced material work for national research programs, particularly in space, photonics, and quantum technologies. However, to operate reliably, the machine required a clean, stable supply of dry compressed air, supported by local infrastructure.

Optofab needed a compressed air system that could support the CNC machine with consistent pressure, clean dry air, and minimal disruption to the surrounding university spaces, including a neighbouring café and gym. After reviewing multiple options, the site team selected KAESER as the preferred equipment supplier. Mobile Compressed Air was engaged to scope, supply, install, and commission the full compressed air system.

The Problem

Optofab’s team required a compressed air system to support their new high-precision CNC milling machine. This machine represented a significant expansion in capability, enabling the team to machine all types of metals and polymers, handle larger and more complex parts, and achieve higher levels of precision.

The system needed to be quiet, low maintenance, and capable of delivering dry, clean air with minimal pressure fluctuation. As the unit would be installed within a busy university setting, noise levels and reliability were critical. Ease of use and simple access to air for future tools or air guns were also high priorities.

Optofab required a system that would support current needs while leaving room for growth, without requiring extensive space or utility changes.

The Solution

Mobile Compressed Air supplied and commissioned a KAESER SM 16 AIRCENTER, a compact, integrated compressed air system that includes a rotary screw compressor, refrigerant dryer, and air receiver in one clean, quiet unit.

The AIRCENTER was selected for its compact footprint, low noise output, and efficient, reliable performance. The built-in dryer ensures a consistent supply of clean, dry air, protecting sensitive CNC components from contamination or moisture-related wear.

In addition to the unit itself, Mobile Compressed Air installed a new air line with three double-head outlets. These outlets were placed for ease of use, supporting current hand tools and leaving capacity for future equipment expansion. The installation was carried out with precision and care, with no disruption to surrounding university facilities.

The Results

The system went online smoothly, supporting the new CNC milling machine from day one. With a reliable source of dry compressed air, Optofab’s technical staff can now run high-precision jobs with confidence, whether machining fine channels, complex curves, or advanced alloys.

The installation enables greater throughput and more efficient production of custom parts. The system’s reliability and quiet operation ensure a professional environment for both researchers and staff, without any disruption to nearby café or gym facilities.

From a technical standpoint, Optofab is now equipped to:

  • Machine larger and more complex parts
  • Achieve tighter tolerances with more consistent results
  • Work across a wider range of metals and polymers
  • Scale its capability to meet increasing demand from Australian researchers and industry projects

The new infrastructure supports the national push to bring advanced manufacturing capability back onshore, with Optofab playing a key role in delivering local expertise and precision engineering services.

Why It Worked

The project worked because the solution was fit for purpose, technically sound, and delivered with care. Mobile Compressed Air listened to the client’s requirements, proposed an efficient and compact system, and ensured that every element, from air quality to accessibility, was covered.

By selecting the KAESER SM 16 AIRCENTER, the team gained a single integrated solution with minimal noise, minimal footprint, and maximum reliability. The system provides stable air pressure and excellent air quality without requiring extensive maintenance or support. It fits the space, meets the spec, and supports the CNC machine with everything it needs.

The added air lines give the facility future flexibility, helping Optofab plan ahead without needing further infrastructure changes.

Lessons for Other Facilities

Precision equipment requires precision support. When compressed air is critical to process reliability, especially in CNC machining, it’s essential to consider air quality, access, and environmental impact from the start.

This project shows that advanced outcomes don’t require overcomplicated systems. With the right compressor and the right support, even a compact installation can deliver high-performance results.

Optofab’s feedback speaks for itself:

“Extremely knowledgeable and competent technical staff, very helpful and responsive sales team.”
“The AIRCENTER runs quietly and reliably, and does not impact the neighbouring café or gym.”
“We are very impressed with the service and support that we have received from Mobile Compressed Air thus far.”
, Evan Johnson, Ultrasonic CNC Milling Technician, Optofab Adelaide Node

Mobile Compressed Air continues to support Optofab with ongoing service, advice, and forward planning, helping Australia’s leading researchers bring complex ideas into real-world form, with clean, quiet, reliable compressed air behind every part.
